Food Coma Nirvana
Ron pointed me at the NYT article on In-n-Out and the (ahem) 16x16 Burger:
The kid in the pictures looks so happy -- he's in the equivalent of "food coma blissful nonexistence" by the end of that meal.
This in turn reminds me of my second favorite meal ever, which took place last Saturday, December 11, at Navio in Half-Moon Bay. (My favorite meal ever was at Charlie Trotter's Restaurant in Chicago in August 1998, but I failed to write down what I had on the tasting menu at that time.)
Navio chef Peter Rudolph's team specially prepared a vegetarian tasting menu for us with accompanying wines to accentuate each flavor. In order:
- Apple jelly with cauliflower cous-cous pre-appetizer.
- Jicama ribbon noodles with earl-grey tea and white truffle sauce. Accompanied by a light Chardonnay.
- Mustard gnocchi with chanterelle mushrooms in a parsley sauce. Accompanied by an Argentinian white wine.
- Celery root with kohlrabi and chestnut puree. Accompanied by a dry Riesling.
- A plate of mixed vegetables: pumpkin, zucchini, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, and squash, with pureed potatoes. Accompanied by a hearty Shiraz.
- Brie cheese, oranges with almonds, and crisp bread. Accompanied by an orange Muscat Riasti.
- A chocolate muffin and caramel cheesecake. Accompanied by a sweet dessert wine.
We had a wonderful table overlooking the Pacific Ocean at sunset. It took me two days to recover from the food coma. But it was so worth it...

My favorite meal ever was also at Charlie Trotter's in Chicago.
