Original post, February 2004. I'd like to upgrade my cell phone to a Treo, but there might be good reasons to wait for the Treo 610. Treo 610 rumored features include:
1. Bluetooth (left out of Treo 600 because FCC approval would have taken too long for a two-radio -- cell and Bluetooth)
2. Higher resolution (more pixels and colors -- 320x320 versus Treo 600's 160x160)
3. More memory (64M versus Treo 600's 32M, only 24M of which is usable)
4. Multitasking (with PalmOS 6, versus Treo 600's PalmOS 5)
The only question is, is the Treo 610 real? While perusing the Treo 600 spec sheet (drool!) I took a reading on the Handspring website -- and I cannot find a single mention of Treo 610 anywhere. Hmmph. I guess this means Treo 610 is not debuting March 1 as earlier surmised -- it's just funny to me that the rumormongers didn't take the opportunity to say April 1 was the ship date. Funny how rumors spread so quickly on the Internet that it's easy to believe them because many places get their information from each other. My guess is that no Treo 610 will ship in calendar year 2004.
So I guess I'll wait a while before buying a Treo to see what the next-gen looks like and if it's as much of an improvement over the 600 as the 600 was over the Treo 300. On a related note, Jeff Beard notes: "Now if you're looking for Bluetooth, WiFi, and a 320 x 480 (half-VGA) display all bundled into a single piece tablet PDA (no clamshell), then Sony's Clie PEG-TH55 device looks intriguing, albeit without the cellular phone functionality." Intriguing, but I'm not buying it. Given how many of my friends are raving about the Treo 600, I want the Treo 600 (or some variation thereof).
Update, May 2004. When/if I'm ready to buy, I'm following Dan Kohn's advice on how to buy a Treo 600. Dan's tips are like the "Pimp My Ride" of Treo ownership.
Update, July 2004. If I am to believe Engadget's Treo 610 News and Palm Info Center, "the next Treo will retain the same basic form factor and layout with a number of improvement, It will be powered by Palm OS 5.x, have 32MB of RAM and a 312 MHz ARM processor. It will include integrated Bluetooth and a 320x320 pixel, 65k color TFT display; it will also have a new camera with digital zoom and video capture, dedicated answer and disconnect phone buttons and a SD/MMC expansion slot with SD I/O." It's due out sometime this fall on Sprint and Verizon, and possibly other carriers.
Update, August 2004. Now Mitch Kapor has a Treo 600 -- there are lots of good software suggestions in Mitch's Treo 600 blog comments.
Update, August 2004. Engadget's Treo 650 News: "Here it is, the new Treo! And it’s supposed to be called the Treo 650, not the Treo 610. As we’ve mentioned before, it is supposed to have said to have built-in Bluetooth, a faster 312MHz processor, 32MB of RAM, a higher-resolution 320x320 LCD screen, dedicated answer and disconnect buttons, and a one megapixel digital camera. More details are sure to come, but in the meantime make you sure click to see all of the pics.
A few other details we’re noticing: a removable battery, a mirror next to the camera lens for taking self-portraits, a definite Bluetooth icon on one of the screens, a bigger speaker, and a more recessed SD memory card slot. Possibly also push-to-talk." Dude. Sweeeeeeet...
From the comments: "Some GREAT news and some VERY bad. First:
* Bluetooth
* High Res
* Totally Different Keyboard Backlighting System
* Video Recording Built In
* 1.3 MP Camera
The BAD? TOTAL INCOMPATIBILITY WITH ALL ACCESSORIES. They simply will not work... not any... not even one (save universal headsets). Cradles... chargers... not gonna work... Pocket Keyboard? Also no."
Hmmm. Many tradeoffs. Must think carefully before blowing hard-earned cash, knowing what a disaster that Green Google Lava Lamp was.
Must read BargainPDA article on Treo 650 to decide whether to wait to buy that one... or instead wait for...
Treo 800g: "Here's a photo copy:

Argh, so many great things to look forward to! And yet, my 3-year-old cellphone grows ever-more-obsolete with every passing day. To wait or not to wait for the Treo 600 610 650 800g... that is the question...
Regarding the Treo 650 (and/or Treo 800g)... someone get me a drool bucket! :)

Ok, I finally got tired of waiting. I saw Niall Kennedy's Treo 650 and Steve Venuto's Treo 650 and briefly stopped being desireless -- long enough to give in. (To get back to my desireless state, I'm going to have to say Om 500 times... :)
Anyhoo, I traded in my own phone and signed over my firstborn to Sprint for two years, and bought a (locked) Treo 650 for $399 after discounts.
I love my Treo 650, and I don't know how I lived without it. (And I'm not even using email and IM on it... yet! :)
I've been crowing to everyone, and now troutgirl and timboy have become Treo animals too...
Sean Bonner wrote up a list of useful applications for Treo 650 that I'm going to have to try out when I get a free moment.
If I get a free moment. :)
